Disclosure statement: Funding to support this study was provided by Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals.
To examine patients with acute optic neuritis who were treated with Acthar Gel within 2 weeks of symptom onset
Dosing
SD=standard deviation.
*Twenty-five patients were enrolled. During the study, 1 patient was eventually diagnosed with a non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy at a relatively young age and was excluded from the study analysis.
MS=multiple sclerosis.
†During the study, 1 patient was eventually diagnosed with a non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy at a relatively young age and was excluded from the study analysis.
The LCVA improved by an average of 5 letters in the affected eye and by 3.4 letters in the contralateral eye.
LCVA as measured by low-contrast ETDRS1
ETDRS=Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study.
Although the affected eye demonstrated significantly (P<.0001) worse high-contrast visual acuity (HCVA) than the contralateral eye at symptom onset, the difference was no longer statistically significant by study end.
HCVA as measured by high-contrast ETDRS1
*The majority of improvement was concentrated in the first 75 days after symptom onset.
The total macular volume decreased by 0.47 mm3 in the affected eye. The total macular volume decreased by 0.057 mm3 in the contralateral eye.
Total macular volume1
All graphs have been recreated to represent data and are not official charts from the publication. Please see publication for individual data trajectories by participant. Bold line signifies the average trajectories of visual acuity or macular volume over the study period for both the affected (left-hand side) and contralateral eye (right-hand side).
MS=multiple sclerosis.
